The Art World of Fibers and Cloth extends far beyond Stitching and here is where you can find our offerings to supplement your sewing knowledge.  ARTeries Fashion Sewing School is working in collaboration with talented local  Asheville artist KAITLYN LEAF to bring you new techniques and processes to build your creative skills range. 

Bloom Alchemy

          Learn to bundle dye with eco printing 

Date: September 20th

Time: 1:00-3:00pm

What it is: 

Join Kaitlyn Leaf of DistrictDyes for an introduction to Bundle dyeing is sometimes referred to as eco printing. It’s a method that lays plant material like flowers onto fabric, rolling it, bundling with string and then steaming or submerging in hot water. Participants will learn about how to mordant fabrics- a process that helps the color stick to the fabric. Then you will experiment with creating a bundle dyed bandana!

While the bundles steam, participants can enjoy some tea while also making a mini bouquet to bring home. 


Supplies: All supplies provided– bandana, fresh flowers, tea, string, steam and takeaway bags.

Color Craft Mountain Blues with Indigo

             Learn to dye in with Indigo in this new class featuring ombre technique.

Date: October 4th

Time: 1:00-3:00pm

What it is: 

Join Kaitlyn Leaf of DistrictDyes for an introduction to Indigo Dye! 

Each participant will receive a flour sack towel and the supplies needed to create beautiful patterns and designs. Learn how to make a vat of indigo dye, to fold and tie fabric to create a resist pattern for dye, and the process of dipping the fabric in indigo. Final project will be rinsed at home with provided instructions.

 

Supplies: Gloves and takeaway bags will be provided.Supplies provided include flour sack towel, rubber bands, sticks, string, and other items to make resist designs. Indigo vat will be communal. Please bring a white or beige garment or item that’s made of natural fibers (cotton, linen, silk, etc.) to get some extra practice with indigo. The dye process can get a little messy, so wear something you wouldn’t mind splattering on.

ColorCraft: A Natural Dye Experience

 

What it is: Every maker needs a great apron, so join this workshop to dye your own! The natural world is full of colors and this workshop will explore how we can use those colors to dye fabric! This workshop focuses on using madder root, gardenia, yarrow, and coreopsis to achieve an array of yellows, oranges and reds. Participants will learn about mordanting fabrics, creating a dye vat, and folding fabrics to achieve patterns.

 

All supplies provided: pre-mordanted aprons, dye extracts, rubberbands, string, blocks, dye vats, and takeaway bags.

Natural dyes take time to set, so there will be some downtime between the active dye parts. While the garments soak in the dye vats, Kaitlyn will lead a gentle chair yoga session to help relieve any tension in the shoulders and back.
